Everyone has seen these commercials, “LOSE 15 POUNDS IN 2 WEEKS”, “BOOST YOUR ENERGY”, “SLEEP 8 HOURS”; generic claims that at times border on outrageous. The natural health product industry has been plagued by these suspicious hooks and continues to face apprehension from consumers due to “bad players” who push products with unfounded claims. As the industry has matured, increasingly companies have worked with independent research companies to provide the proof required to make proper claims.

Clinical studies investigate products prior to being cleared for sale in the market. If a product has a label claim that states, “improves brain health”, then it must also provide you with the confirmation that the claim has been proved by means of a clinical study. Such studies are designed to provide the answers on how a product works and how it can best benefit you as the consumer.

Clinical research studies are at the heart of all medical advances. These studies, test potential treatments in human volunteers to see whether they should be approved for wider use in the general population. Clinical research adds a high value to society as it determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, supplements, devices, and other such products intended for human use. It allows one to learn more about human health and is used to establish guidelines on treatment, prevention and for improving the quality of life.

Natural Products are naturally occurring substances that are used to restore or maintain good health and include: vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies, traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines, probiotics and other products like amino acids and essential fatty acids. These products are essential for the optimal functioning of our health. The demand for natural products is growing and in response to this need food scientists are developing ingredients from plants, animals, marine sources, and microorganisms with the promise of improved health outcomes.

New and innovative products are being launched continuously, and competition is fierce to bring more products to meet the demand. The natural product market is expected to continue growing at an annual rate of 8 per cent to 14 per cent, outpacing that of the traditional processed food market and was estimated to reach $180 billion USD in 2015 by Nutrition Business Journal. To be licensed in Canada, natural health products must be safe, effective, of high quality and carry detailed label information to help people make safe and informed choices. As the market becomes flooded with products, consumer safety also takes precedence and clinical research becomes essential to provide consumers with reasonable choices.

People participate in clinical trials for a variety of reasons. Healthy volunteers may participate to help others and to contribute to moving science forward. Participants receive the newest supplements and are part of cutting-edge research in bringing new products to market. Participants in clinical studies enjoy personal attention from dedicated researchers and medical professionals and all products that are being investigated are provided at no cost to them. In addition, participants are compensated for the time they dedicate to the clinical trial and for some expenses such as parking. Clinical trials in natural products offer hope for many conditions by providing supplements that may improve quality of life. Generally natural products have a far better safety profile than pharmaceuticals as well.

KGK Science Inc. in London is a world-leading research organization that has been at the forefront of natural health product research since 1997. KGK is currently conducting clinical trials to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of several products. KGK’s clinical trials are conducted under the direction of a medical director and principal investigator. An independent ethics board, approved by Health Canada and follow Good Clinical Practice, reviews all studies. All records relating to your identity and study participation are confidential as per the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. Each study has its own guidelines – aka eligibility criteria. To ensure the strongest results, researchers want study participants to be alike in key ways, examples of eligibility criteria might be age, gender, and/or your previous medical history.

KGK is currently conducting trials for: Weight Loss, Vitamin C, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Heart Health, Multivitamin & Multimineral, Stomach Pain, IBS, Menopause, Probiotics, and Eye Health for Kids.
